| Born and raised in California, Liz Meyer studied drawing and painting at the University of California, Santa Barbara. After graduating, she became a freelance illustrator and was a graphic designer and art director for a design studio in Sacramento. Since moving to Illinois fifteen years ago, she has shown her work in Illinois and Wisconsin, in several on-line galleries, including juried shows and publications. | |
Wanting to combine her interests in figure skating and art, Meyer decided to capture the etchings the blades left in the ice with a rubbing. After spinning or jumping, she finds marks left in the ice and makes a rubbing with graphite on paper. The rubbing shows all the details and jaggedness of the ice breaking apart. The various kinds of spins and jump take-offs make beautiful, energetic lines, and by working into the negative spaces, she can reveal the lines she wants the viewer to see. From this negative image, she has created a positive image of the design in the ice and this is what is reproduced here on the clothing. |
